In Enugu South, a remarkable transformation has taken root, driven by Eco-cyclers’ commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action. Through the Empowering Youth Civil Society to Build Stronger Communities in Nigeria project, Eco-cyclers have played a pivotal role in fostering positive environmental change.

Inspiring Climate Action Through Community Engagement

Initially, climate action awareness in the Enugu South community was limited, with minimal interest or participation. However, our efforts to engage residents through community dialogues ignited a newfound enthusiasm for climate initiatives. By sharing knowledge on waste pollution and promoting green practices, we successfully motivated the community to adopt sustainable behaviors. This heightened awareness has spurred community members to take active roles in climate action, fostering a collective sense of responsibility for their environment.

Building Capacity for Greater Impact

Before participating in the project, our team had limited knowledge of Nigeria’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) frameworks. The project provided essential training that expanded our understanding of these critical climate policies, empowering us to align our initiatives with national climate goals.

While we initially focused on waste management and recycling efforts among youth and women in underserved areas, the project broadened our scope. With improved skills and stronger collaboration with other civil society organisations, we now implement strategies that enhance community resilience and contribute meaningfully to national climate action efforts.

Advancing the Eco-cyclers Mission

The project seamlessly aligned with our mission to promote collaboration between individuals, the environment, and economic development. By integrating our objectives with the NAP and NDC frameworks, we amplified our impact. The project’s expert training and partnership opportunities equipped us at Eco-cyclers with the tools to empower young climate advocates and strengthen community-level engagement.

Today, Eco-cyclers stand as a beacon of change, demonstrating how grassroots efforts can drive climate resilience. Through enhanced knowledge, strategic partnerships, and empowered community members, we have successfully transformed Enugu South into a community that embraces climate action as a shared responsibility.

Conclusion

The success stories emerging from this project reflect a powerful shift: youth and youth-led civil society organisations are no longer just advocating for climate solutions, they are designing, leading, and driving them. From grassroots training sessions to community dialogues and policy co-creation, these stories spotlight the depth and breadth of youth CSOs engagement in advancing climate action by building stronger communities across Nigeria.

Together, these stories demonstrate how empowering youth civil society organisations can strengthen climate resilience, promote inclusive participation, and activate grassroots leadership across Nigeria. Whether through shaping climate policies or co-creating adaptation plans the beneficiaries of this project are helping to build a more sustainable and equitable future for their communities, and for Nigeria as a whole.
