Earlier this month, we joined 24 other Civil Society Organisations at the Civic Space Resource Hub Cohort IV Training on Regulatory Compliance, hosted by the West African Civil Society Institute. (WASCI)
For three days, we discussed the real issues CSOs face in Nigeria today. From new laws and tax rules to financial management, digital safety, and staying true to our mission in a shrinking civic space.
At NGYouthSDGs, we know good work needs good systems. This training gave us practical tools to stay compliant, transparent, and resilient as we advocate for youth inclusion across Nigeria.
Why This Training Matters Right Now?
Nigeria’s civic space is changing fast. CSOs are dealing with more government checks, tighter funding, and new legal requirements. Some international donors are also pulling back.
WASCI created this training to help organisations like ours adapt, not shut down. Out of over 300 applicants, only 25 CSOs were selected. We’re grateful NGYouthSDGs was part of this important cohort.
What We Learned.
- Know the rules, protect the mission.
Nigeria has over 50 laws guiding NGOs. CAMA 2020 now means stricter reporting, at least 2 trustees, and more CAC oversight. Trustees can be held responsible for non-compliance. Knowing the law helps us stay independent while staying safe.
- Clean books equals trust.
Tax compliance isn’t optional. Every individual needs a Tax Identification Number (TIN). Annual returns and audited accounts must also be filed. Tax exemption is not automatic and poor records mean penalties and lost donor trust.
- Governance matters.
Clear board roles, financial checks, and separation of powers keep CSOs healthy. Founders shouldn’t run everything. Transparency, like publishing audited accounts, builds credibility.
- Data protection is now law.
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, any organisation handling data for over 5,000 people must register with the Data Protection Commission.
Why This Matters for NGYouthSDGs?
At NGYouthSDGs, we ensure young people are part of policy, climate action, and governance in Nigeria. To do that well, we must be credible.
Donors, partners, and youth need to trust that we manage funds properly, follow the law, and protect their data. This training was not just about ticking boxes. It’s about building an organisation that lasts, so we can keep serving youth for years to come.
What We’re Doing Next.
Our team is already reviewing internal policies and financial systems based on what we learned. We’ll also share key insights with other youth-led CSOs. A stronger civic space benefits all of us.
The challenges are real, but so is our commitment. With better systems, we can focus on what matters: creating space for youth voices in Nigeria’s development.
Passion isn’t enough to run a CSO today. We need structure, knowledge, and accountability too. Thanks to WASCI for equipping us to do better.
