Event: A Nigerian Youth SDGs Network Youth Dialogue event will be held at the residence of the Australian High Commission, Abuja, Nigeria in December 2017. The event will be titled “Youth Impact Stories on the Sustainable Development Goals” and will be co-hosted by the Australian High Commission and the Nigerian Youth SDGs Network Committee.
Rationale: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by United Nations (UN) Member States in September 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure human rights and prosperous and fulfilling lives for all by 2030. The SDGs themselves are very inclusive, allowing youth a distinct role in the process of implementing the 17 Goals and in addressing challenges specific to their respective age groups. Concerted efforts are needed to identify their needs and incorporate their voices in ways most appropriate to their respective engagement channels and specific challenges. The youth dialogue will serve as a review progress on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria as we head into the 2nd year of the SDGs by January 2018.
The four hours Impact Story Sharing session will focus on the following SDGs:
Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere;
Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture;
Goal 4: Achieve inclusive and quality education for all
Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls;
Goal 8: Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full
and productive employment and decent work for all, and
Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
The objective of the story sharing event are as follows;
1. Create a platform for the sharing of knowledge, experience and work done
on the Sustainable Development Goals and youth action.
2. Ten youth-led organizations will showcase their work on the SDGs via videos and photo sharing and participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn from actual implementation.
3. Explore areas of partnership between Nigeria and Australia for advancing
the development of young people
4. Create a means where young people in Nigeria with support from Australia can advocate for the Global Goals.
Venue: The event will be held at the residence of the Australian High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria.
Planning and Format: The planning committee will be chaired by the Nigerian Youth SDGs Network with assistance from the Australian High Commission. The one-day event will have a report for participants on the key discussion points and action items. The planning committee shall make every effort to ensure that perspectives from diverse regions and communities are
represented, including marginalized communities and groups.
Participation: Representatives of youth civil society organizations that are associated with the SDGs, government representatives, National Youth Service Corps, NGOs from the Major Group on Children and Youth, and young people interested in the SDGs are invited to register. Additionally, NGOs are asked to support the participation of representatives of vulnerable and marginalized
communities most affected by poverty, inequality, and injustice.
Activities:
1. SDGs Performance Review and Implementation stories in Pictures and 2 minutes short videos from selected youth organizations working around SDGs.
2. At least each member organization can submit a collection of their innovative projects implementation around SDGs or 2 minutes videos. This is a creative way of learning and knowledge sharing and will be very entertaining.
