As the world faces unprecedented environmental challenges, the role of young people in driving climate action has never been more critical. The Empowering Youth Civil Society to Build Stronger Communities in Nigeria also known as the #ClimateActionForStrongerNaija project is a transformative initiative designed to empower young people and youth-led civil society organisations (CSOs) to play a pivotal role in addressing climate change in Nigeria. The project focuses on building the capacity of these youth CSOs to actively contribute to the implementation of Nigeria’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
This initiative, which received over 300 applications, 219 were shortlisted for the next eligibility phase. These organisations, representing a diverse range of initiatives, were carefully evaluated to ensure alignment with the project’s mission. Our team dedicated weeks to interviewing these eligible organisations, engaging with their leaders, and understanding their visions for a greener Nigeria.
The vetting process did not stop at interviews. Recognising the importance of on-the-ground impact, members of our team were dispatched to physically visit these organisations. These visits were crucial in assessing the community-based impact and sustainability of the initiatives proposed. This hands-on approach allowed us to gain deeper insights into each organisation’s work, challenges, and commitment to climate action.
After thorough assessments, 15 outstanding youth-led civil society organisations (CSOs) were selected. These organisations stood out for their innovative approaches, commitment to their communities, and their potential to drive significant change. Each of these CSOs will now receive support to scale their efforts, Through a combination of capacity-building activities, advocacy efforts, and strategic partnerships.
