Empowering Youth Civil Society to Build Stronger Communities in Nigeria Project’s Impact through Plogging Nigeria in Nsukka.

In Nsukka, a quiet yet powerful transformation has taken place, one driven by climate action and the determination of young changemakers. What began as a simple idea to engage youth CSOs in climate resilience efforts by NGYouthSDGs has sparked a movement, one that is redefining waste management as a climate solution in the community.

The #ClimateActionForStrongerNaija Project arrived at a crucial time, empowering young people to take proactive steps in reducing emissions and building climate resilience. Youths in Nsukka town and its neighboring areas, inspired by the project, mobilised to address waste, a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. They organised clean-up drives, turning once-littered streets into cleaner, more welcoming spaces. This hands-on effort played a vital role in mitigating the environmental risks posed by waste pollution, especially during extreme weather events linked to climate change.

Recognising the carbon footprint associated with waste, these young climate champions adopted innovative approaches to recycling. They collected plastic bottles, cans, and paper, channeling these materials back into productive use rather than allowing them to break down and release harmful gases. This circular economy approach not only reduced litter but also curbed waste-related emissions, reinforcing the community’s resilience to climate threats.

The impact rippled far beyond the visible reduction in litter. Inspired by the project, residents started adopting climate-smart behaviors — separating recyclables, reducing waste, and spreading the message of environmental responsibility. These actions contribute directly to climate mitigation by reducing landfill waste, one of the major sources of methane gas.

For Plogging Nigeria, the project’s success didn’t end with cleaner streets, it was a catalyst for engaging key stakeholders in climate action. The enthusiasm it sparked drew a wave of new volunteers, especially from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka campus. Energised by Plogging events, these young environmental advocates became powerful voices for sustainability. Plogging Nigeria also strengthened its relationship with Nsukka’s local government council and other stakeholders, positioning itself as a trusted partner in environmental advocacy and action.

The #ClimateActionForStrongerNaija Project has been more than just a project; it has become a model for how grassroots movements can drive meaningful climate action. By equipping young people with the knowledge and tools to mitigate climate risks, the project has ensured that its impact extends far beyond litter reduction. Today, the once-littered streets of Nsukka tell a story of youth-led climate action, community resilience, and a collective commitment to protecting the planet for future generations.
