Following the invitation from the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), NGYouthSDGs was represented by her Programmes Manager, Opeyemi Ogundeji at Nigeria’s first in-country workshop focused on the National Launch of the NDC Project Checklist in Lagos, Nigeria.
This workshop was organised by the NDC Partnership in collaboration with the Government of Nigeria, aiming to enhance capital mobilisation for climate-related projects. The central objective was to bridge investment gaps through improved transparency and alignment with the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Our participation at the workshop is in line with our ongoing project at NGYouthSDGs “Empowering Youth Civil Society to Build Stronger Communities in Nigeria” where we are equipping fifteen (15) youth civil society organisations from Ondo, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Delta, and Enugu with funding from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany. This alignment emphasises the importance of grassroots mobilisers as ecosystem enablers in fostering stronger, more resilient communities through informed participation in climate-related initiatives. It’s our belief that the skills and resources provided through our project will enable these youth civil society organisations to actively participate in discussions around the relevance of funds mobilisation for strategic climate initiatives that ensure that youth voices are integral to the implementation of climate policies – National Adaptation Plan and Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Presentation of the NDC Project Checklist
There was a presentation to outline a structured approach that has been developed to enhance the smooth execution of the NDC Project Checklist, consisting of four main steps:
- Stakeholder Identification: Engaging relevant stakeholders to identify potential projects and entities.
- Technical Assistance: Providing the necessary support to help projects reach a pre-feasibility stage.
- Prioritisation: Assessing projects based on their alignment with NDCs and potential for impact.
- Match-Making Event: Facilitating connections between capital seekers and providers to secure funding.
For those who might be interested in the funding opportunity, the importance of aligning projects with the following criteria was emphasised:
- Projects related to climate mitigation and adaptation.
- Preferably projects over their pre-feasibility stage
- Projects actively seeking funding within the next 12-18 months.
- Entities committed to collaborating with the NDCP and CrossBoundary Checklist Program.
The workshop marked a significant step forward in mobilising capital for climate-related projects in Nigeria. By facilitating a structured approach to project identification, assessment, and funding, the NDC Project Checklist aims to streamline the process of achieving the country’s climate goals. Through increased transparency and collaboration, the workshop laid a foundation for sustainable investment practices in line with Nigeria’s NDCs.
The active participation of the capital providers, seekers, ecosystem enablers and civil society organisations in the room reflects a growing commitment to tackling climate challenges and enhancing Nigeria’s resilience to climate change.
