Nigeria Youth SDGs Network will be hosting a session at the International Youth Conference happening between 30th and 31st January 2021. The virtual event with the topic Rethinking Education and Decent Work will happen on Sunday 31st January 2021 at 8:25 pm GMT+1 via Facebook. The two days conference with the theme New Normal, New Beginnings is organized by Generation Next Network in partnership with the United Nations Global Communications Department of Civil Society unit, Vanguard and United Nations Habitat.
The session on Rethinking Education and Decent Work features an expert panel made up of Goodness Ogey, Shadrach Akpem, Ebenezar Wikina and moderated by Adenike Alade. The session will have the speakers share about the importance of remote learning in building up the capacity of young adults for jobs of the future. It will be an opportunity to share findings from the #DecentWorkNG survey on the aspirations of young Nigerians on decent work and how policymakers can ensure young people get jobs and stay in jobs.
Speaking about the session, the Project Coordinator of Nigeria Youth SDGs Network, Joshua Alade reiterated the importance of meaningful youth engagement in the recovery plan following the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. “This pandemic has shown us that we need to create job safety nets for our youth and invest in remote learning. Millions of young adults are not learning because they do not have the technology and millions of youth have lost jobs or taken a pay cut because their work is not technology-based. We must invest in digital learning and providing opportunities for youth to build skills in technology. The old way was not good for young people and we cannot afford to make the same mistake in a post COVID19 era.”
