Shrinking Civic Space: Implications for Human Rights Advocacy in Nigeria – Human Rights Fiesta 2024

Restrictions on freedom of expression, assembly, and association hinder youth engagement in crucial dialogues and actions necessary for sustainable development. The Human Rights Fiesta, organised by Amnesty International in Nigeria served as a vital platform bringing together human rights defenders,  activists, legal experts, journalists, and members of the public to discuss the challenges and strategies for protecting human rights in Nigeria.

For NGYouthSDGs, this event highlights one of our thematic focuses – Civic participation, and particularly, buttresses how a shrinking civic space directly impedes our ability to effectively advocate for the achievement of the SDGs.

Our Youth Activators Lab Associates, Mr Godwin Lasisi and Mrs Morenikeji Olaniran attended the Human Rights Fiesta 2024,  hosted by Amnesty International, held at the Royal Choice Inn in Abuja on 5th December 2024,  representing NGyouthSDGs. The event focused on the critical issue of shrinking civic space and its impact on human rights advocacy in Nigeria.

The Fiesta featured a diverse range of activities, including keynote speeches, panel discussions,  drama presentations, video screenings, and interactive sessions. These activities provided valuable insights into the complexities of the shrinking civic space and its implications for various aspects  of human rights advocacy, particularly concerning youth engagement. The event also highlighted the crucial role of technology, media, and legal frameworks in protecting civic space and promoting human rights, all of which are critical tools for youth in driving SDG progress.

The Human Rights Fiesta 2024 provided several key takeaways that are crucial for understanding the challenges and opportunities for human rights advocacy in Nigeria’s shrinking civic space,  particularly as they relate to the work of the Nigeria Youth SDGs Network. These takeaways highlight the urgent need for collective action to protect civic freedoms and promote human rights,  which are inextricably linked to achieving the SDGs.

  1. Shrinking Civic Space Poses a Significant Threat to SDG Achievement: The shrinking civic space in Nigeria poses a significant threat not only to human rights advocacy but also to the achievement of the SDGs. Restrictions on freedom of expression, assembly, and association hinder the ability of individuals and organisations, including youth-led initiatives like the Nigeria Youth SDGs  Network, to advocate for the SDGs and hold those in power accountable. This shrinking space directly impedes progress on goals such as Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), which emphasises the importance of inclusive and participatory governance.
  2. Collaboration and Solidarity are Essential for Youth Advocacy: Collaboration and solidarity among civil society organisations, human rights defenders, and youth-led networks like ours are essential to counter the shrinking civic space and advance both human rights and the SDGs. By working together, we can amplify our voices, share resources, and develop effective strategies to protect civic freedoms and promote youth participation in SDG implementation.
  3. Creative Expressions are Effective Tools for Youth Engagement on SDGs: Creative expressions,  such as drama, video screenings, and social media campaigns, are effective tools for engaging youth on human rights and SDG issues. These creative mediums can make complex issues more accessible and relatable to young people, inspiring them to take action and become agents of change.

The Human Rights Fiesta 2024 served as a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting civic space and promoting human rights. These rights are not only ends in themselves but also essential enablers of sustainable development. The key takeaways from the event provide a roadmap for collective action, particularly for youth-led networks like NGYouthSDGs, to tackle the challenges posed by shrinking civic space. It is crucial to ensure that all individuals, especially young people, can enjoy their fundamental freedoms and contribute to a better future.

This underscores the need to educate and empower young people in communities so they understand their civic rights and basic human rights. By doing so, they can make informed choices about which lawmakers to elect – those who prioritize the development of youth in their communities. Our efforts in Enugu East Senatorial District reflect this goal, as we equip youth with the knowledge and skills to advocate for their rights, engage in local democracy, and foster dialogue with their representatives, thereby building trust between youth and their lawmakers.
