This week, Goodness Odey had a short interview with Vivian Unamba, the founder of Viva Initiative for the Vulnerable in Africa who is focused on eradicating poverty and also providing access to quality education for the vulnerable people in our society.
Viva Initiative for the Vulnerable in Africa is a non-profit, and non-political organization that is committed to solving the root causes of problems affecting the quality of life of the vulnerable and the marginalized people in urban and rural areas. The mission of the organization is to advance the lives of children, girl child, women and other vulnerable groups through advocacy, training, , capacity development, household economic strengthening and service delivery.
What inspired the work you do?
While growing up, I watched my mum help a lot of people and that inspired me.
What are some of the challenges you have faced so far?
Since we are self-funded, Partnership and support is our major challenge.
Can you suggest ways African leaders can ensure that we achieve the Global Goals?
To achieve global goals, African leaders can ensure there is coherence between global goals and leadership and also effective participation of all stakeholders.
What do you think young people can do differently for us to advocate for the Global Goals?
SDG Advocate and Nobel Prize‑winning economist Professor Muhammad Yunus say “Today’s young people are the most powerful generation in human history. The question is: what do they want to do with that power? If you don’t use that power, it will be wasted. You can re-design the whole world in the way you can imagine it. Your capacity is to do massive things”. These are positive calls to action. I believe that by working together, we create a strong coalition and will be able to engage more people to achieve global goals.

What’s your biggest motivation?
My biggest motivation is the smile I see on people’s faces especially kids when we encounter them and solve a need.
What’s your philosophy of life?
There are 2 kinds of people, the GIVERS and the TAKERS. The takers may eat better but the givers sleep better.

What advice can you give to young who are still trying to find themselves?
